Vacuuming Hacks

When it comes to household chores, most would agree that they’d want to get it done quicker and more efficiently. People are constantly coming up with tips, tricks, and hacks to make cleaning easier. As vacuum specialists (literally, it’s in our name!), we love that one machine can be so versatile and get different jobs done, including ones that you might not expect.

Here are some of our favourite hacks to put your vacuum cleaner to good use.

1. Use a brush attachment for dusting

A brush attachment can be your best friend for areas that are dust magnets, including blinds, curtains, baseboards, wall accents, bookcases, nooks, crannies, and more. Using the brush attachment on your vacuum cleaner is a great alternative to using a duster because it sucks up the dirt and dust, whereas a duster can push dust around and into the air.

When using a brush attachment on blinds or curtains, be sure to adjust the vacuum setting to low so you don’t damage your window treatments.

2. Start and end with vacuuming on deep cleaning days

On deep cleaning days, we recommend vacuuming first and last, including using the brush attachment to remove dust on all surfaces. When you spray cleaning products onto dust and wipe, the dust bunches up and becomes challenging to remove. Vacuuming first removes a layer of dirt and debris and makes the rest of the cleaning job smoother. Finishing off with a vacuum removes additional particles that may have fallen onto the floor after wiping.

3. Use a seam ripper to clean vacuum brush rolls

Hair, pet dander, and accumulated dirt can all gather and bunch up onto the brush rolls, making the vacuum cleaner less efficient. If you’ve ever tried to pull at the hair and other debris to remove it from the brush roll, you know how difficult and time-consuming it can get.

Instead, take a seam ripper and cut through the mess. Using scissors risks cutting into the brush roller but a seam ripper is small enough to cut all of the clusters out without damaging the roller.

4. Get creative to vacuum tight areas

Corners, tiny areas between hard flooring, the hard-to-clean tracks for sliding doors, window rails, among others are some of the most frustrating and challenging to clean. When the vacuum attachments are not enough, it’s time to get creative with a squeeze bottle lid and a cardboard toilet roll.

The squeeze bottle lid can get into tiny openings, including the small gaps and crevices in hard floors. A cardboard toilet roll is flexible and you can pinch the end into the shape you need. It’s perfect for getting into the narrow tracks and railings for windows and sliding doors, or the areas just underneath household appliances.

5. Use stockings to find small items

If you’ve dropped a tiny item like an earring backing or a spring on a carpet or rug, it can take quite a bit of time to feel your way through to find it. A great, time-saving hack is to attach stockings at the end of the vacuum hose secured with a rubber band. The stockings act like a filter that prevents the small items from being sucked up and into the cartridge.

Final Thoughts

Today’s vacuums have a wide range of accessories and parts designed to get the job done. A good quality vacuum is one of the best tools to have in your cleaning arsenal to keep your space tidy, healthy, and enjoyable to live in.
